THE ESSENTIAL WINERIES OF GREECE 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS

Day 1 – ATHENS

After arrival at Athens airport, the unique wine tourism experience in Greece begins with a meeting with a Greek wine expert and a transfer to a hotel of Athens. A short briefing on the itinerary will be followed by an introduction to the Greek vineyard and its wines, for a first, theoretical approach. Moving on from theory to practice, we will enjoy an early afternoon tasting of wines from the region of Attica, accompanied by cheese and cold cuts. The region of Attica, is home for the largest single vineyard of the country and has a huge wine tradition. Here dominant is the native white variety Savvatiano , alongside with many other Greek and international grape varieties.

Day 2 – ATHENS – NEMEA

After breakfast departure for Nemea, Peloponnese. Before our wine adventure begins, our contact with Nemea starts with a visit to the Temple and Sanctuary of Nemean Zeus. Zeus was honored in antiquity as a protector of livestock and crops, including the vine. This Temple was in the center of the Sanctuary, with many buildings for worship and sporting events of ancient games, the Nemean Games. The first winery to visit in Nemea, a region hosting more than thirty wine producing units and one of the largest vineyards of the country, is one of the top ones in the area, Semeli Winery. The tasting focuses on Greek native varieties which represent the philosophy of the wineries in Nemea and Mantinia. Departure for Malandreni village near the ancient city of Argos, where we visit one of the most beautiful, advanced and organized wineries of Greece, Domaine Skouras. We will taste the wines of charismatic in communicating winemaker, George Skouras and enjoy a meal in the exceptional venues of the winery. Return to Athens for a gourmet dinner in a city restaurant, accompanied by wines from Nemea region and an overnight stay.

Day 3 – ATHENS – SANTORINI

After breakfast, departure by hydrofoil to famous Santorini island. After a first look at the island, which takes one’s breath as it rises up through the sea and it captures the mind with an image that you can’t forget, we visit Domaine Sigalas. This is one of the best wineries of the island, with world class wines of international reputation. After a tasting of the wines, a meal on the winery’s premises will take place. Santorini is known for its sunset, which one can enjoy from many spots of the famous Caldera. The winery of Santo wines, of the wine producing cooperative of the island, is built on one of these spots. We will enjoy a winery tour, a wine tasting , and have an acquaintance with different local products, like waterless tomatoes, fava bean, famous for their highly concentrated taste. Dinner at a restaurant accompanied with Santorini wines. The ones of the Assyrtiko variety, are amongst the best white wines of the world because of the soil and climate conditions of the island (very limited rain, strong winds and volcanic soil which has never been infected by phylloxera).

Day 4 – SANTORINI – ATHENS

Visit to the archaeological site at Akrotiri which was inhabited during the Late Neolithic period (around 4500 BC) and by the 18th century BC had become a city. With the eruption of the active, even today, volcano of Santorini, in the beginning of the 17th century BC, it was destroyed and was re-built and flourished in the Late Cycladic period I, until the Minoan eruption. On to Exo Gonia for visit, wine tasting and a light meal at the beautiful by the sea Gaia winery. Back to Piraeus port by ferry and transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Athens.

Day 5 – DEPARTURE

After breakfast at the hotel, departure for the airport.
