Day 1 – ATHENS
After arrival at Athens airport, the unique wine tourism experience in Greece begins with a meeting with a Greek wine expert and a transfer to a hotel of Athens.
A short briefing on the itinerary will be followed by an introduction to the Greek vineyard and its wines, for a first, theoretical approach.
Moving on from theory to practice, we will enjoy an early afternoon tasting of wines from the region of Attica, accompanied by cheese and cold cuts. The region of Attica, is home for the largest single vineyard of the country and has a huge wine tradition. Here the native white variety Savvatiano is dominant, alongside many other Greek and international grape varieties.
Day 2 – ATHENS
After breakfast, we will visit and tour the Acropolis, one of the wonders of the ancient world and an architectural, technological and cultural jewel of the world, incomparable in beauty.
Departure for Paiania, for the first visit Papagiannakos winery, one of the most modern wineries of Greece which was designed to operate under a bio-climatic protocol. The visit includes the winery tour, an organized tasting of the wines and a meal in the winery’s beautiful guest hall. Savvatiano variety produces little gems in Mesogaia region and wine producers of the area are really proud for them.
Departure for Koropi for a visit and tasting of the wines of Domaine Vassiliou. This is one of the two wineries of the Domaine. However wines from the estate’s winery in Nemea will be tasted as well. The wine producer himself will be present to talk about his wines, his rising Savvatiano grape variety, and winemaking techniques.
After returning to Athens and before the second overnight stay, gourmet Return to Athens and gourmet dinner in a restaurant, accompanied by wines from the wine producing areas visited in the morning, which are widely called Mesogea, for a more complete contact with their wines, which are extremely food-friendly.
Day 3 – ATHENS – NEMEA
Breakfast at the hotel and departure to the wine region of Nemea.
Before our wine adventure begins, our contact with Nemea starts with a visit to the Temple and Sanctuary of Nemean Zeus. Zeus was honored in antiquity as a protector of livestock and crops, including the vine. This Temple was in the center of the Sanctuary, with many buildings for worship and sporting events of ancient games, the Nemean Games.
The first winery to visit in Nemea, region hosting more than thirty wine producing units and one of the largest vineyards of the country, is one of the top ones in the area, Semeli Winery. The tasting focuses on Greek native varieties which represent the philosophy of the wineries in Nemea and Mantinia.
Departure for Malandreni village near the ancient city of Argos, where we visit one of the most beautiful, advanced and organized wineries of Greece, Domaine Skouras. We will taste the wines of charismatic in communicating winemaker, George Skouras and enjoy a meal in the exceptional venues of the winery.
Return to Athens for a gourmet dinner in a city restaurant, accompanied by wines from Nemea region and an overnight stay.
Day 4 – ATHENS – SANTORINI
After breakfast, departure by hydrofoil to famous Santorini island.
After a first look at the island, which takes one’s breath as it rises up through the sea and it captures the mind with an image that you can’t forget, we visit Domaine Sigalas. This is one of the best wineries of the island, with world class wines of international reputation. After a tasting of the wines, a meal on the winery’s premises will take place.
Santorini is known for its sunset, which one can enjoy from many spots of the famous Caldera. The winery of Santo wines, of the wine producing cooperative of the island, is built on one of these spots. We will enjoy a winery tour, a wine tasting , and have an acquaintance with different local products, like waterless tomatoes, fava bean, famous for their highly concentrated taste.
Dinner at a restaurant accompanied with Santorini wines. The ones of the Assyrtiko variety, are amongst the best white wines of the world because of the soil and climate conditions of the island (very limited rain, strong winds and volcanic soil which has never been infected by phylloxera).
Day 5 – SANTORINI – CRETE
After breakfast we will visit the archaeological site at Akrotiri which was inhabited during the Late Neolithic period (around 4500 BC) and by the 18th century BC had become a city. With the eruption of the active, even today, volcano of Santorini, in the beginning of the 17th century BC it was destroyed and was re-built and flourished in the Late Cycladic period I, until the Minoan eruption.
A visit, wine tasting and a light meal in the beautiful Gaia Winery just by the sea.
Afternoon departure for Crete island by hydrofoil.
Arrival at the city of Heraklion, transportation at the hotel and a gourmet dinner at a restaurant, for a first acquaintance with the Cretan cuisine. It is one of the most special ones in Greece, characteristic for the exceptional raw materials and deeply tasty flavors, characterized as the mother of the Mediterranean diet. We will taste Cretan wines whose dynamics is constantly rising in recent years.
Day 6 – CRETE
Breakfast at the hotel will be followed by a visit at the archaeological site of Knossos, an important city of Minoan civilization with roots from the Neolithic period until the 5th century. It was the base of king Minos with the palace and the beautiful myths about the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, being the main attraction.
Visit and wine tasting at Lyrarakis winery. Manolis Lyrarakis is one of the visionary winemakers of Crete who promoted indigenous varieties of the island such as Dafni and Plyto. After wine tasting, we will enjoy our lunch, based on the traditions of ancient Minoan gastronomy.
Before returning to Heraklion we will visit Daskalaki winery, where we will taste the award-winning wines, most of which are produced by biodynamic viticulture.
Gourmet dinner in a restaurant of the modern city of Heraklion of Crete, accompanied by Cretan wines, excellent examples of Mediterranean style.
Day 7 – CRETE – THESSALONIKI
Breakfast at the hotel and flight to Thessaloniki via Athens.
Visit one of the top Greek wineries, Domaine Gerovassiliou which hosts the most important wine museum of Greece and the largest collections of corkscrews in the world. His modern wines are produced with grapes from sustainable vineyards. The wine tasting will be followed by a light meal.
A visit to the vibrant city of Thessaloniki. The second largest city of Greece is famous for its beauty; it is a coastal city and is characterized by a wonderful mix of relaxed rhythms and vividness.
Dinner at a restaurant accompanied by region’s wines.
Day 8 – THESSALONIKI – EDESSA
Ride to the city of Naoussa, one of the most important wine regions of Greece and the Mecca of Xinomavro, and visit to Kir Yianni winery for tour and wine tasting. Here Xinomavro and other native varieties combine technology and tradition, producing modern greek wines.
Visit Dalamaras Winery for wine tasting and light meal. This winery is closer to the wine tradition of the area while the owners’ restless spirit has led to alternative choices of vine cultivation. We will hear winemaker’s approach for “natural” wines, that is with less interventions during vinification.
Visit Fountis winery. It is a family winery reminding those of Burgundy. The wine production of the winery is close to the tradition of Naoussa wine region.
Departure for the beautiful city of Edessa where the largest waterfalls of Greece are situated. Dinner in a city restaurant accompanied with wines from Goumenissa wine region where Xinomavro is mixed with the Negoska variety.
Day 9 – THESSALONIKI – AMYNDEO – VEROIA
After breakfast, departure for Amyndeo, the second area where Xinomavro on its own gives excellent results. Alpha Estate winery, has one of the most modern and well-designed vineyards of Greece and the wine tasting will be a special experience.
Lunch at the ouzo-restaurant Naoumidis which serves local dishes, for a unique taste contact with the Macedonian delicacies from excellent raw materials and special recipes.
Visit Domaine Karanika next to lake Vegoritida, where the wine tasting includes one of the best sparkling wines of Greece. Made of 100% Xinomavro, it will demonstrate the possibilities of this multidimensional variety in sparkling wine as well.
Departure for the beautiful city of Veroia, famous for its natural waterfalls and beautiful landscape. Dinner with wines of the region and an overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 10 – VEROIA – THESSALONIKI
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the airport of Thessaloniki.
