Available from March to June & September to November.
Day 1 – THESSALONIKI
After arrival at Thessaloniki airport, the unique wine tourism experience in Greece begins with a meeting with a Greek wine expert and a transfer to one of the city’s hotels. A short briefing on the itinerary will be followed by an introduction to the Greek vineyard and its wines, for a first, theoretical approach. Moving on from theory to practice we will have an afternoon tasting of wines from the area of Macedonia, accompanied by cheese and cold cuts. The area of Macedonia and Thrace has been known since antiquity for their vineyards and their wine production. In the north-west of the area the Xinomavro variety is dominant, mainly for the production of red wines with very good aging potential, but also for white and sparkling ones. Macedonia however is also home for some of the most beautiful wineries of the country, and at the same time a leading force in the cultivation of international and indigenous grape varieties.
DAY 2 – THESSALONIKI
After breakfast we visit one of the top Greek wineries, Domaine Gerovassiliou in Epanomi village. The winery hosts the most important wine museum of Greece and the largest collections of corkscrews in the world. His modern wines are produced with grapes from sustainable vineyards. On our way to Chalkidiki we visit a historic estate, Domaine Porto Carras next to its high standards hotel resort with excellent facilities for visitors. The estate’s vineyard is one of the largest in Greece and is home for native and international vine varieties. After the wine tasting and the meal, we will return to Thessaloniki and at night we will enjoy dinner at a city restaurant accompanied by local wines.
DAY 3 – THESSALONIKI – NAOUSSA
After breakfast, departure for the city and wine region of Naoussa. Naoussa is one of the most important wine regions of Greece and the Mecca of Xinomavro, the second of the two most important red vine varieties of Greece. We will visit Dalamaras Winery. This winery is closer to the wine tradition of the area while the owners’ restless spirit has lead to alternative choices of vine cultivation. Even in an approach of wine production close to those we call “natural”, that is with less interventions during vinification. Next visit to the Kir Yianni winery for wine tasting and lunch. Here Xinomavro but also native grape varieties meet technology, without forgetting tradition and producing Modern Greek wines. Dinner at one of Naoussa’s restaurants, accompanied by local wines and overnight stay.
DAY 4 – NAOUSSA – AMYNTEO – VELVEDOS
After breakfast departure for Amynteo, the second area where Xinomavro on its own gives excellent results. Visit to Alpha Estate, that has one of the most modern and well-designed vineyards of Greece and the wine tasting will be a special wine experience. Lunch at the ouzo-restaurant Naoumidis which serves local dishes, for a unique taste contact with the Macedonian specialties, from excellent raw materials and special recipes. Next visit to Domaine Karanikas next to lake Vegoritida, where the wine tasting includes one of the best sparkling wines of Greece. Made of 100% Xinomavro, it will demonstrate the possibilities of this multidimensional variety in that type of wine as well. On to Veroia for dinner and overnight stay in a charming hotel.
Day 5 – VEROIA – THESSALONIKI
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Thessaloniki airport.
